Ahmedabad is a city that builds. When it cannot face something, it builds over it — new road over old memory, glass tower over closed mill, fresh paint over a wall that still remembers what was written on it. The grief does not leave. It just gets a new address.
The greenhouse had burned three days ago.
What remained was this: a temporary site cabin at the edge of the blackened property, three plastic chairs, a folding table with one leg shorter than the others, and a ceiling fan that pushed the hot air from one corner to the other with the tired persistence of something that had long since stopped believing it was helping.
Kabir Vaidya had been sitting in this room for eleven minutes. He had not asked a single question.
On the windowsill, pushed to one side, sat a steel tiffin. Blackened at one edge. Nobody had moved it. Kabir had noticed it in the first minute and said nothing. Men protect files. Families pack tiffins.
Three men sat across the folding table. Partners. Founders. Friends — or people who had been friends long enough that the word had become structural rather than felt.
Each one was lying.
